The Batman

Matt Reeves has reportedlyturned in the first part of a Modern scriptforThe Batman , one have a unseasoned version of the Caped Crusader , but that does n’t necessarily mean it ’s time to recast Ben Affleck as Batman just yet .   Rumors of Affleck staying or going have been whirl for calendar month now , but just because a jr. version of Batman joins the universe of discourse does n’t mean his days are count .

When theatre director Zack Snyder first cast Ben Affleck for the purpose of the Dark Knight inBatman v Superman : Dawn of Justice , he was depict a very dissimilar edition of Batman . Snyder ’s Batman was a vigilante who ’d been battle against Gotham ’s darkness for decades and had pay a terrible monetary value for his state of war on crime . He ’d lose hope , abandon rule , and become far more wild than the traditional interpretation , and it took Superman ’s forfeit to inspire him to become a hero once again . It was an atypical take on Batman , but it gave Warner Bros. the chance to assume years of backstory for the Caped Crusader , give him an establish rogues ' art gallery and weaving type like Harley Quinn , Joker , and Deadshot intoSuicide Squadwith little difficulty .

The Batman Poster

The latest reports paint a picture Matt Reeves , author and director ofThe Batman , is take a very different approach . He ’s trust to have just turn in a book , one focused on a younger version of Batman . If this is accurate , then it implies Ben Affleck wo n’t be starring in the film after all . But it does n’t mean Affleck is leave the DCEU .

The Batman Could Be A Prequel

If Matt Reeves ’s playscript does indeed call for a younger Batman , this is more potential to be a prequel moving picture . Any other approach - just boot the graphic symbol in a younger shape - would clash with the narrative of the DCEU to particular date . It would also sacrifice the relationships that were core inJustice League , such as Batman ’s father - fig role with Flash .

Thus , if the film is indeed part of the DCEU , it ’s most likely set in the past and cut into into the Dark Knight ’s DCEU backstory . There ’s precedent for this approach;Wonder Womanwas set during the First World War , andWonder Woman 2isbased in the ' 80s . Both research the history of Diana , and presumably will at last explain how she became the torpedo we first encountered on the big silver screen inBatman V Superman . In just the same way , Matt Reeves ’s flick could   reveal how Bruce Wayne began his journey as Batman . Sequels could explore just how the caption of the Batman became so big in Gotham , how he encountered important member of his rogue ' art gallery , and how he gained - and lost - Robins

While sleep with the ultimate outcome of this version of the character could be a bit stiffen for Reeves , the references to Batman ’s past in the DCEU so far have been vague enough to leave the author / director a lot of room to put his own twirl on events . In fact , so long as Reeves does n’t kill   off Batman , Alfred , or Comissioner Gordon , he can basically do whatever he wants up until the events of the Kryptonian invasion

Young Ben Affleck DCEU Batman

Not only would this give Reeves freedom to narrate basically any Batman story he need , but could also sum up more backstory to Affleck ’s rendering of the character , present fans some of the upshot that occurred on his journey to the human beings - weary fall Batman introduced by Zack Snyder .

A Younger Batman May Not Be In The DCEU

There is another possibility , though ; thatThe Batmanisn’t set in the DCEU at all . DC ’s rival Marvel Studios is renowned for its shared cinematic universe , where every film fall out in the same world as the others . The DCEU was intended to be DC ’s result to that , but unlike Marvel , Warner Bros. does n’t mean all their superhero films to be   part of the same continuity .

Warner Bros. has a number of " Elseworlds - esque " moving picture in the works under a label called"DC Dark " or " DC Black"- standalone adventures set in a dissimilar reality to the DCEU .   The first of these will be an as - yet - untitledJoker stemma write up , withJoaquin Phoenix reportedly in talks to play the Joker . This will be completely disjoined to Jared Leto ’s Joker , who ’s expected to come along in a number of cinema , includingaSuicide Squadspinoffand aJoker / Harley Quinnspinoff .   This clearly set a case law for Warner Bros. to actually apply two edition of the same type at once . One can be part of the DCEU , and the other be in his own separate reality . If the studio is doing this for the Joker , why could n’t they do the same for Batman too ?

That would be a smart move , provide the studio apartment to research the former years of the Dark Knight without care about the backstory fromBatman V Superman . As a resultant role , you ’d in reality have two different portrayals of Batman on the big screen at the same time - but they ’d be very different .

Affleck’s Batman Doesn’t Need To Be In Solo Films

Batman has always been a hero who ’s full of contradiction . On the one hand , the Dark Knight on a regular basis insists that he cultivate alone ; on the other , he seems to expend most of his time in squad - ups , and collects sidekick at a prodigious rate . The DCEU has focused in on the latter aspect , on Batman as a team player . Tellingly , Batman V Supermanheavily implied that it wasthe death of Robinthat caused Bruce Wayne ’s descent into brutality , and his first chemical reaction to Superman ’s destruction - which brings him out of that funk - is to put together a team . The DCEU ’s Batman is a man who has been alone for far too long but has finally set up allies and even friends .

yield that ’s the case , Warner Bros. may in reality be wise not to do solo Batfleck films at all . Instead , Affleck could play the part in cameo and team - up movies , with a continual stress on the relationship Batman is developing with the rest of the Justice League . He could appear inThe Flash , for exercise , in a continuance of the wise man kinship he build up with Barry Allen . The Dark Knight ’s genius could prove invaluable in helping Superman get by with another alien threat , or else he could modernise his friendship with Diana in a future ( present - day)Wonder Womanmovie . Bruce Wayne could basically become the " Nick Fury " of the DCEU , the glue that arrest the Justice League together . Logically , that would mean he ’d play a major role in ( sure inevitable ) team - up pic .

That would give up Matt Reeves’sThe Batmanto set up a fresh Batman franchise , one that stands on its own but does not compete with Affleck ’s portrayal of the Caped Crusader . Where Affleck ’s Batman is a squad player , Reeves ’s could be the solo paladin , the human beings who really does n’t play well with others . The two different depiction could coexist   as part of two   freestanding franchises .

Ben Affleck fans should n’t count the worker out just yet . If these report card are precise , and if Reeves ’s first script is indeed one that star a younger Dark Knight , that does n’t needfully signify Affleck ’s time in the hood is coming to an final stage . Rather , it may well simply indicate that Warner Bros. is organise another " Elseworlds - esque " franchise , an attempt to use two dissimilar versions of the Dark Knight at one and the same time .
