Director Peyton Reed , who also helmed the firstAnt - world , told us more about the sequel ’s premiss on theAnt - Man & The Waspset and how it sets the picture aside form its predecessor - itself , a heist movie set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe .

Reed told us that he wantedAnt - Man & The Waspto have a different writing style quality to it than the firstAnt - Man , which is where its " one big night " frame-up comes into play . He also said that the premise allowed him to rig the story in and around San Francisco , which he noted is largely undiscovered territory in the MCU ( since the firstAnt - Manmostly used the urban center as a backcloth to its story ) . As such , Reed looked to a span of classic ' 80s movies for stirring :
Well , in terms of when we first started spill the beans about what Ant - Man and the Wasp would look and experience like and the variety of movie we want to make , I definitely get going let the cat out of the bag about thing like After hour and Midnight Run and these thing where there ’s a lot of advancing impulse and it ’s , you do it , there ’s almost a road moving-picture show character to the movie in that way .
The first movie because it was an origin news report , you know , a raft of it hold spot sort in Hank Pym ’s house and these thing , and I just wanted to unfold the moving-picture show up and get out and take advantage of San Francisco , because that felt like a different texture for the MCU that , that Ant - Man sort of occupy this turning point of the universe , you get laid , and we desire to really get alfresco and search those ingredient . We also liked the idea of having , you make love , the first moving picture really , the template was more of a like a heist movie and this we desire to be a small more of , you know , an Elmore Leonard vibe , where we have scoundrel , but we also have antagonist and we have these roadblocks to , to our heroes catch to where they involve to be . And getting what they ask for this delegation , so it felt like this sort of - little more chaotic comedy and action in the movie feel like a good next step for Ant - Man and the Wasp and I also really wish that - I like when you ’re doing a continuation or a next movie - I always like the ones where the start off point , the leap out off degree for the fictional character is different than when you left them .
And again , I know that everyone who ’s ever made a second installment of something touch to the Empire Strikes Back as the aureate standard , but as a kid , I was sixteen when that movie came out and I loved that sort of - they really leapt ahead . The heroes are somewhere else now and the consultation has to kind of gimmick up to what ’s exit on and what fall out and they ’re forward in terms of their character , but also in terms of their circumstances and that felt like something we really wanted to do . It also felt like because of what happen with Scott Lang in the brief clip he ’s in Civil War , we could n’t snub those circumstances . And for our jumping off peak , my first questions were ‘ What did Hank and Hope know about Scott going off and dealing with that situation with The Avengers ? And did they know about it ? How did they feel about it ? ’ And surely , this would have caused some kind of stress at worst and , and rift at unspoilt between the fictional character . Because Hank Pym ’s very clear in the first film about how he feels about Stark and how he find about The Avengers and being very protective of this engineering that he has , so that seemed like a really ripe sort of position to start in terms of the character development .
" Tension"between the heroes , as Reed mentioned , is a key fixings of race - against - the - clock action / comedies , fittingly enough . SinceAnt - Man & The Waspcan’t contend with other late MCU films in terms of scale , this sound like a chic way to keep things exciting in the film without the earthly concern - terminate post of anInfinity WarorThor : Ragnarok . The setup is also very different from the firstAnt - Man , yet it continues to expand on that movie both thematically and in a world - building sense . So long as the execution is up to snuff , Ant - Man & The Waspshould make for both a solid MCU continuation and stout bridge deck betweenInfinity Warand the films that came before it .
