Avengers: Age of Ultron
Last week we share aninterview with Chris Hemsworththat was conducted from within Stark Tower while he was suit up as Thor . This was during ourAvengers : Age of Ultronset visit last summer where we spent two days touring several massive stages and chatting with the cast . We have to contain back on the detail of what we saw for a while , but on daytime two , where we mouth withRobert Downey Jr.(dressed up in a fine Tony Stark suit ) andMark Ruffalo(wearing a apparent motion capture getup ) , we also had a probability to speak with Jeremy Renner who returns in the sequel as the squad ’s marksman , Clint Barton a.k.a . Hawkeye . As the only character of the core six heroes who did n’t appear anywhere during Phase 2 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe , we askedRennerabout theAvengers 2script and size of the movie , how writer and theatre director Joss Whedon organize so many moving parts , and how they ’re exploringHawkeye ’s personality for the first metre . We also talk about his thought on Hydra and the fall of SHIELD during the events ofCaptain America : The Winter Soldier , who Barton is really loyal to , why he ’d joinThe Avengersagain and the idea of exploringHawkeye more on TV.Renner , who also now star in theBourneandMission : Impossiblefranchises , talks about playing an even more physical grapheme here as well but more importantly , beingsmartas an Avenger without great power . He shares much of his screen inAge of Ultronwith new character Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch , but moviegoer will also see more of Black Widow and Hawkeye ’s history reveal . How has Hawkeye ’s role evolved from the first Avengers going to this one ?
Jeremy Renner : It ’s a lot of the stuff that Joss and I talk about to doing the first one , but it just did n’t work out that way . It ’s really exciting for me and Joss to kinda dive into the character a little bit more .
There ’s some howling secrets and relationships intensify . Yeah , there ’s a lot more of him to deal with versus like , you have it off , the mesmerize variant of him .
Yesterday , talking with Lizzy Olsen , she start really express mirth as she was talking about the relationship that you had at the beginning with Pietro and Wanda - and that you were a delightful grump .
Renner : [ laughs ]
Can you talk about work them into the movie and how it ’s been to sort of welcome them into the Avengers fold ?
Yeah , those are capital lineament . Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver are great character reference . And my character and them have a lot to do together . They ’re a little blurred on where they stands far as practiced and bad which I appreciate , I guess . [ LAUGHS ]
But , yeah , I think I ’m sort of patrol them to see if they ’re worthy or not , I judge , of being , you know , good guys or regretful guy . I oppugn them a lot .
One of the grown questions that came out of Captain America 2 was - because the S.H.I.E.L.D. was fall - where was Hawkeye ? Are we expire to get a authoritative answer to that question .
Joss Whedon directs Elizabeth Olsen & Jeremy Renner
Yea ! You ’ll be intimate . You ’ll bed in this film , yeah . Where he ’s been . [ LAUGHS ] Yeah . [ CHUCKLES ] Yeah , you ’ll know . It ’s , uh , it ’s actually a really wonderful secret reveal . Yeah , it ’s somewhat awesome .
We see a bunch of gear mechanism and diagrams and a board full of Hawkeye arrowheads and arm . Talk about these new weapons that we regard . I saw photos of his new costume too .
Yeah , he ’s get a coat , ‘cause we were fight in the woodwind . He ’s father this pretty coolheaded pelage . I ca n’t move in it , but [ LAUGHS ] it ’s nerveless depend at least . [ CHUCKLES ] And , yeah , all the tech - there ’s always new technical school and different things . I do n’t wanna get into any of that sorting of stuff and nonsense either , but yeah , there ’s some new costumes , Modern tech - got some novel characters and there are estimable guy wire ; there are high-risk bozo .
There ’s a luck more of us together in the movie as all Avengers , which I consider there ’s only once or twice that we had that [ in the first pic ] . So that ’s been quite fun and the long days to shoot , there ’s a lot of mass to brood in a picture when you have like ten Avengers in a movie , in a tantrum , but there ’s a lot more about what I think work in the first one . They ’ll have that exponentially more in this one .
What was your reaction when you first aim the script , and how much has it changed from when you first acquire it to what you ’re really filming ?
The bones of it were always there and the script that we get was really strong and outstanding , and then , as we go along , there ’s more thing we find and - as in any movie - there ’s just a bunch ! There ’s so much to hatch . I do n’t recognise how Joss does it . All I have to rivet on is like diminished , little parts . Like I ask - what the heck ’s being built over me ?
I have no estimate [ LAUGHS ] what ’s run on . I have in mind this world and all the affair going on in this flick are just so vast and so many things going on . And I cogitate for the most part the script is what it was when we start , and you know , you make small-scale adaption to here and there for clarity and , like I said , it ’s a big , magnanimous , big pic .
By his nature , Hawkeye ’s a very physical part . He was very knotty in that final battle sequence of the first movie without having the powers or technical school of some of the others .
That ’s the fun part .
Joss Whedon directs Elizabeth Olsen & Jeremy Renner
How has that changed in this movie ? Is it more physical ? Does it find like you have still have to kind of stay up with the other Avengers ?
Yeah , I reckon it ’s - I ’ve done a lot of that stuff already . We still have a couple more sequence to go where it ’s , you screw , it ’s , it ’s fun . You have to be a sassy hero when you do n’t have the topnotch power and that ’s what makes him [ CHUCKLES ] sort of ace , in a direction , I opine . He has to utilize his mind as much as it his physical ability , and his power to never miss . Just do n’t miss [ LAUGHS ] , but yeah , delay at a aloofness and do n’t neglect .
Hawkeye seems very cynical and skeptical . How does he react to something like the Vision ?
Yeah , that , again , that ’s just like Pietro , who ’s Quicksilver , and Wanda , who ’s Scarlet Watch . I mean he ’s always very unbelieving of new people , ‘cause it ’s sort of - it ’s military kind of cerebration in the sense of like , I have to trust that you have my six or you have my back while I ’m trying to manifest something up here .
You have to do work as a unit , as a squad , otherwise we all fail or I die or somebody else dies . So that ’s where the disbelief comes in . It ’s not to just to be crabby or not to like somebody . It ’s all there for a reason , and that plays a fortune in this movie .
Does he still have a strong connection to Black Window for that reason ?
Yeah , yeah , of course ! They have a long , foresighted history together and there ’s more of that revealed in this as well .
He is particularly sceptical with Scarlet Witch though , because I mean , he has to be kind of cauterise after have his mind command thanks to Loki …
Yeah , there ’s a little morsel of that , yeah . I intend ‘cause that bechance to , uh , to , people in the movie , I guess . You know , it ’s [ CHUCKLES ] , uh – I ’m not giving away too much , but yeah . I mean it ’s , uh [ LAUGHS ] – uhh , he does n’t – y– yeah . Yes , there ’s animus , I suppose , with any newcomer , in effect or speculative .
The last few old age has been particularly kind to Hawkeye in the Comic Books . I cogitate Matt Fraction has brought a whole unexampled take to the character that is awesome . Is there any signified for you , as you ’re finished with this , that they ’re gon na research Hawkeyeawayfrom the Avengers ?
[ SIGHS ] I do n’t know . I mean , no . Well , I signify there ’s always opportunity in the Marvel universe to jump into a pot of different scenarios , but only if it make horse sense , I retrieve that - just as an outsider - that , you lie with , Captain America , those sort of thing , he fits into that creation jolly well because they ’re alike in their form of military form of ideals . Like , Hawkeye ’s not in Thor . It ’s to really heavy to really suppose that but they leave it pretty wide receptive for a lot of different venues , a lot of different scenarios to have . I do not get it on the future . I ’m just well-chosen to be doing it now .
Do you have a personal preferent Avenger ?
I do n’t know , I mean they all have their own coolheaded things about it . But as an actor , there ’s no other part I ’d rather play then the one I ’m doing . It ’s a tangible human being , and I screw how to [ CHUCKLES ] do real human stuff . [ LAUGHS ] I do n’t cognize the other guys do that [ CHUCKLES ] superhuman matter . [ LAUGHS ]
How is Hawkeye carry on with the fall of S.H.I.E.L.D. , ‘cause , obviously , this is an organization he was a huge part of and it was rotten to core …
Yeah , you know , for me , my take on it is , it ’s probably a good matter . He ’s kind of a lone wolf anyway . And he ’s a team player , only ‘cause he sort of has to be . He ’s not really a troupe humans . You know what I mean ? Cap I guess can be that guy . Hawkeye ’s on his own court . Again , a lot’ll be revealed with a few simple scenes . You ’ll understand why he is and imagine the way he thinks . But , yeah , S.H.I.E.L.D. , I do n’t think , was ever really that of import to him . Fury ’s awful . He wish Fury and will do anything for him , but a ship’s company man is just not him . He does n’t punch in and punch out .
Without knowing the exact future of Hawkeye and Marvel get a pretty successful season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and all these Netflix series on the way , do you have any stake in seeing Hawkeye involved in the existence out of doors of the movies ?
I mean there was talk of suffer some of the guy wire go up and jump onto the TV show . I remember them remark something about that . Um , again , there has to be a near verse or reason for it , and , you recognize , I like the character enough and anything to do to search him more . I ’m always undefendable to it , ‘cause he ’s patently not had a franchise of his own to really profoundly search really who Hawkeye is .
And , yeah , I ’ve always wish to explore the guy more . He ’s interesting role to me .
Does it conflict with the movies , with what Joss is doing with the picture , to have him in come along in things where they really have to keep it very tight ?
Even when you blur the lines like that , you still do n’t wanna cement yourself into a direction to where , you know , you pop somebody off . It ’s hard to kind of bring him back . I signify they rather did that with S.H.I.E.L.D. with Coulson and the Avengers death , correct ? They try not to package themselves too much into those things , ‘cause it leave behind these options for them . And [ Kevin ] Feige is the tool master behind all this . So I guess they ’re really smart about that stuff .
Talk about the vibration on stage set compare to the first pic . Downey and a few of the others have babble out about it so much , saying that everyone ’s having a lot of fun . And it just feels like a more of a like a family unit . Was that how it ’s been for you ?
Yeah , absolutely . I mean I regard Downey like twice , I suppose , in the last Avengers , and this one , we ’re all together a lot more . So that makes it really , really great , and , um , tedious when we sprout it , because it ’s [ CHUCKLES ] - there are so many people to cover . And there are so many storylines to tell , but it take in the off - camera stuff just so much more playfulness .
I personally wish to go to study and just put to work and like pink out some action sequences and get it done and we do do that , but then , when we ’re all together , it ’s really great playfulness . It ’s a really marvelous fellowship unit . It ’s the best part of doing a big , crazy , natural process movie like this , which ordinarily can be quite unfulfilling as an artist , but because all the mass involved in this are so swell , it just - it makes coming to body of work every Clarence Day really , really joyous .
In terms of the action , Chris Evans spoke about consciously really wanting to evolve Cap ’s scrap style . Are you look for the same with Hawkeye ?
Yeah , I believe that we ’re always trying to incur that . Again , there ’s new tech and new costumes and new things . And there ’s always new ability , and new sorting of things . For illustration , if Hawkeye is a distance guy , what happens when he ’s up at close quarters ? And we did a little of that in the first Avengers with take in to use arrow just in deal and have to do different things like that , you know , be nimble and fly between people ’s leg .
You have to be clever with things . Clever fighting is to me is what I like to explore a lilliputian bit more of as well . And then using each other , like if it Cap and I , and let ’s say , Widow , are in a scene , how can we apply each other ’s abilities as teamwork ? He can chuck out me somewhere up higher . It ’s where these fresh characters are great too , with Scarlet Witch you ’ll discover that her abilities are just being tapped into in this movie and what they can become , she ’s still learning what they are , which is really cool , piece .
That to me , as a nerdy , geeky buster about this world , that ’s what I ’m excited to kind of see what happens in the futurity because that can be quite fun . Again , it bump a fiddling bit in this but I really want to explore more of that .
We saw in the airplane propeller room , you talked a little act about a whole cluster of arrowheads that seemed to be almost Stark’d out . Can you talk about some of those things and plan out scenes with these novel tools ? Do they tell you in progress or do you show up on set and they just show them to you and explain on the spot ?
Um , both . It ’s both . It ’s kind of like the bat belt for Hawkeye . HE really has a lot of utility , and for writers to make this scene creative in any scenario , ' Oh look , he has an arrowhead that does this and does that ' but it ’s still just the tip of an arrow . It can only do so much . But , yeah , some thing , we get a couple fresh technical school things that were , were pretty cool . I ’m like , ' oh , I did n’t know I had that . ' I ’m like ' all right . ' [ LAUGHS ] ' That ’s coolheaded . That ’s a cool one . Yeah . '
Do you wanna tease us with one of the specifics ?
No . [ LAUGHS ] There ’s a couple nerveless Modern single though .
With Hawkeye being such a lone wolf fiber , before this movie The Avengers have already reunited andEvans describes them as a military unit . Was it easy for Hawkeye to sign up to that ? I ’m curious what the motive is for Hawkeye to connect a team rather than doing his own thing , you know .
Yeah , you have to see the movie for that one , brother . [ LAUGHS ] Yeah , for sure . Cap is the police chief . He call or Fury call , that ’s who he listen to .
Joss Whedon ’s touching was all over the first Avengers , but this movie ’s dissimilar because it was his from twenty-four hour period one . It ’s purely coming from him , and Robert [ Downey Jr. ] talked a little about finally " knowing " Joss after this movie . How has that been different in working with him and has the modality been different on solidifying ?
Well , I ’m seeing him a circumstances more , which is nice . I ’ve know him since ' 98 since I did Angel with him . Yeah man , it ’s great to dive into the reference - and he ’s just as mad as I am about , just for me in person , for us get hold , you know , who Hawkeye is . I remember the beginning of the motion-picture show , we were shoot the remnant of the movie , as flick go , right ? And there was this moment where it ’s more of a chatty snatch for Hawkeye , and we realize , ' wait , well , and we ’re running out of time or doing all this hooey , all this action stuff . ' And he ’s like allow ’s finish all the activity . Maybe we can do the little gabby spot back on point or something , and he was a little afraid . He ’s like ' this is the first time I really kinda see him in his personality or what his sense of humor might be or who he really is . ' And , I ’m like ' yea , I do it , let ’s think about it for a bit . have ’s play around with it , ' and not have like 30 minute to shoot and , you know , cement ourselves into something .
It ’s been a lot of playfulness . I always feel good , ‘cause I know him so well . I sleep with when he like a take and he likes something , and it ’s always been like one and a half takes and , like , its ’s ' okay we ’re done . I got it . Neat . ' When I get him smiling or laughing and he experience near and that ’s a good feeling . I wish making him happy , ‘cause I hope him . Even I do n’t know what I ’m doing on half the clock time , I ’m like [ LAUGHS ] , like ' really ? Well , okay . Right , I ’ll do it . ' [ CHUCKLES ] And I mean I ’ll campaign back on a few things [ CHUCKLES ] , but , yeah , ' I know how to shoot a curtain call and arrow . ' Um , [ CHUCKLES ] ' you recount me , like , what to do . ' [ LAUGHS ] But , yeah , he ’s great , man . We ’ve had a pile of fun and he ’s , you know , he ’s the , he ’s the mastermind behind all this stuff in these Avenger movies . They ’re out of the question to drop a line . Impossible . [ CHUCKLES ] But he does it and rive it off .
