Screen Rant sit around down with Benicio and spill about the alteration in his case from the first motion picture , his usage of signaling speech in the movie , the moving-picture show ’s composition , and his reaction to Jeff Goldblum ’s desire to play with him .
SR : From the first cinema , we know that your reference ’s very complex . But we get to spend a small spot more time with him in this film . How does Isabella change him ?
Benicio : Well , Sicario : Day of the Soldado , they ’re there on a new covert functioning , new missionary post . And part of the mission he has to kidnap an clean-handed girl , Isabella , who ’s the daughter of a drug cartel loss leader , in rules of order to get cartels to fight each other . So , in a way , my character initiate to re - act out , and the girl was about the same age as his girl . So , he place his girl , Isabella through the terror , the same terror , the same experience that his girl hurt before his daughter was killed . So somehow that take off working in his psyche . And subsequently when he ’s given the order to eliminate Isabella , somehow the relationship with Isabella and the whole journeying has awakened a sense of right and wrong . There ’s a turn there , where he disobeys the order and decide to protect the lady friend .
SR : You be intimate , there ’s a beautiful view in this movie that I thought was a great tonal shift . Where Alejandro meets this deaf soul in the desert . And I heard that that was actually your idea . Can you speak a little bit about , what maybe you brought to the character that was n’t necessarily on the page ?
Benicio : Well , you know , it was my musical theme , a collaboration with the conductor . But what I was looking for was something that would connect Alejandro with his utter girl . And his daughter was hard of hearing . Deaf . And so , this is the first fourth dimension he does sign language with anyone since his girl was kill . And there is Isabella right there . So , I recall it work on in that way of the brain of Alejandro being rupture apart so that his heart can pump warm blood again .
SR : I lie with that scenery .
Benicio : Oh , thank you . We get a lot of helper from someone who know . And the house linguistic process is actually Mexican sign language . Because it ’s different .
SR : The first film focus a heap on the drug cartel . This one ’s more about the immigration side of that . What do you want people to take off from this film ?
Benicio : Well , I do n’t cognise if it ’s really about immigration . But it ’s more about , I think it ’s about the war on drug . And basically , there is no resolution . And if anything , it ’s like the theme of combating the wildness of the war on drugs with violence , it just does n’t go anywhere .
SR : Now , Jeff Goldblum spoke of late about wanting to share the screen with you in a Marvel film . Have you talked to Jeff ?
Benicio : No , I have n’t talked to him , but it ’d be an honor for me to work with him . I ’ve been a sports fan . And you know , it ’d be enceinte . You sleep together , it ’d be great .
