Beowulf

In 3DBeowulfis an incredible visual experience that youmustsee… but leave the kids at home.

I need to make a few thing clear before I start my review :

1 . I have not read the source cloth in any build , be it the classic poem or any graphic novelisation of it .

2 . Folks , please discount the PG-13 rating given to this picture show . This is an R - rated movie!!How in the infernal region it was give a PG-13 boggles my brain .

beowulf

3 . This is a revaluation of the IMAX 3D version of the photographic film , not the standard ejection version and the review will speculate that experience .

The plot ofBeowulfis pretty straightforward on the face of it : Monster torments the local kingdom sporadically , the King finally says enough is enough , a hero and his full-blooded band of men show up to defeat the monster , monster defeated … but not really .

You ’ve probably read about it ( lots of articles about it here on this site ) and between all the bizarreness of the publicity campaign ( restricted dawdler for a supposedly PG-13 film ) and the talk about how real ( or faux ) the CGI characters look you may be wondering if it ’s worth watching .

Ray Winstone in ‘Beowulf’

I ’m here to tell you : Hell yes , it is .

As the film open up you are hit with the 3D issue right off the cricket bat with the output company and studio apartment Son floating and spinning before you . From there we go to a panoramic scene of the countryside and a townspeople and we fly towards it . So far the 3D outcome is extremely coolheaded and this give the watcher a luck to start out adjusting to it before the actual narrative begins .

We finally enter a building where the townsfolk assemble for celebrations and this is where we match King Hrothgar ( Anthony Hopkins ) , his immensely younger queen Wealthow ( Robin Wright Penn ) and the King ’s right hand man Unferth ( John Malkovich ) . The King is drunk and barely dressed to the nines in what seems to be no more than a tack , and he is lionize the twist of this new assembly plaza as his wife looks on in disgust at his sometime , heavy and bibulous ego . The celebration is quite loud , and we witness a very far ranging pullaway shot go away the town and heading out into the tidy sum . finally we arrive at the cave where the monster Grendel ( acted by Crispin Glover ) lifespan . Grendel has incredibly sensitive hearing and unluckily for him the acoustics of the cave magnify the sound of the solemnisation to an pinna - splitting level .

Robin Wright in Beowulf

Grendel is a deplorable and hideously misshapen creature who lives off of stock he ’s kill . He does have a taste for humans but his mother Angelina Jolie seek to keep his eating of humans to a lower limit . However at this point the racket is too much for Grendel and he heads into town and murders almost everyone in the sphere in a very long and gruesome scene . For some reason he does not kill the King , seeming almost enamored of him although the King wants him to fight .

After this rampage the King sends out the word that they call for a hero to arrive kill the monster , and we meet Beowulf and his boy sailing what look like a Viking ship on stormy seas . They arrive and it twist out the Beowulf and the King have be intimate each other for a longsighted time . Winstone plays Beowulf with all the power of King Leonidas in 300 , but with an overly proud streak . He is fond of boasting ( and embellishing on ) stories of his adventures , including explicate why he lost a swimming race in boisterous seas against another man .

I do n’t want to baby too much but of course you screw he ends up agitate Grendel . Beowulf issue forth up with the outlandish manly system of logic that since the monster is unarmed , he must struggle it wholly unarmed as well . Now when I saycompletelyunarmed I intend it .

Beowulf standing on the water’s edge

He fights the colossus butt - defenseless .

Now I read the desire to stay close to the original verse form , but I have to say I come up this distracting to say the least . Half the prison term I was compensate more attention to the creative methods they used to immobilise the purview of his genitals in this setting . Yes , I understand the point : It was man vs goliath in it ’s purest forum , but I stand for back then they wrestled naked in the Olympics , so I judge it was kind of the affair to do . The guy could have at least worn some sort of manly skirt or something .

Eventually Beowulf meets Grendel ’s shapeshifting mother who constitute a bargain with him that will supposedly make him a male monarch forever and a day . Of course we bonk what happens when you make lot with monster .

Grendel stalks the mead hall in Beowulf

Do n’t get me wrong … I think the fierceness belong in this film . As a topic of fact I would have favor that they had n’t endeavor to get a PG-13 and rather just went for the R - rating and upped the intensity .

surely not throughout the entire cinema and with every character , but there were moments when I was watching closeups of Ray Winstone or Anthony Hopkins and remember " Damn , we are 99.9 % there . " The failing was in most of the female characters : Robin Wright Penn looked like a living Barbie doll , and the village women seemed fairly stilted . But the lead male eccentric ? Holy cow … freaking unbelievable . I do n’t know what precisely changed since Robert Zemeckis ' last CGI motion capture filmThe Polar Express , but the conflict is dark and day . That picture show ’s reference had a creepy-crawly living manikin vibe to them that was completely missing from most of the characters in this film , both animal and human .

Angelina Jolie looked unbelievable , like a cartridge top airbrushed variation of herself . Yes , she was basically bare ( again , PG-13 ? ) in more than one shot . What was as amazing was the fashion they capture her face while she talk . To me she look as alive as I ’ve seen her in any pic . In the performances of Winstone , Hopkins and Brendan Gleeson ( Wiglaf ) you could see the nuances of their performances , captured by the most subtle of facial movements and expressions that you only register subconsciously when talking to someone .

Movies

And the Draco ? Coolest darned flying lizard I ’ve ever take in on film .

Overall it was an amazing experience and amazingly the 3D effects I likedleastwere of the " in your face " variety : A shaft intrude out of the CRT screen towards the audience and that sort of affair . What made the experience fat was when it was subtle and it brought you almost literally into the motion picture . If you ’re break to see this motion-picture show , make certain you see it in 3D digital at the very least . If you may make it an IMAX field that ’s a incentive . Beowulfis the moving picture that cracks the 3D barrier folks .

The futurity of the movie theater experience is 3D and it ’s here .
