The Iron Giant

After doingIncredibles 2 , author - director Brad Bird says he ’s not concerned in doing continuation to any of his other celluloid hit . Bird is one of those rare directors in the business who has found success   in   both the animated and hot - action flick music genre . Cutting his tooth as a character layout artist , designer , and director on TV’sThe Simpsonsin the early 1990s , Bird ’s expectant breakthrough in picture show hail in 1999 as the author and director of the animated feature of speech classicThe Iron Giantbefore he find his manner into Pixar .

It was at Pixar where Bird flourish writing and directing - and winning Best Animated Feature Oscars - for both 2004’sThe Incrediblesand 2007’sRatatouille . Interestingly , though , Bird moved on to direct live - action in short thereafter , taking the helm of the Tom Cruise undercover agent - thrillerMission : Impossible - Ghost Protocolin 2011 , which became a oecumenical smash hit hitting . However , Bird ’s lot ran out in 2015 with his second bouncy - action projection , Tomorrowland ,   which was n’t as successful as his previous movies - critically nor commercially - but that has n’t deterred him from live - action movies ; he just does n’t want to repeat past stories .

With more hit than misses , Brad Bird has often been press about doing subsequence , and he ’s only acquiesce just once withIncredibles 2 . And while Bird enjoin he ’s flattered that people want to see him direct sequels toThe Iron Giant , Ratatouille , andMission : Impossible , he insist in an consultation withio9that he ’s closed the book on those films . Bird said :

" I ’m told I need to remake everything that I ’ve made and no one apparently desire anything novel any longer . I ’m a little at odds with smart set on that . I would like to do some young thing …   I finger like   I ’ve done my   Ratatouille . I ’ve done my   Mission : Impossible   and I ’ve done my   Iron Giant . And that ’s that . I ’m not disturbed about it but it seems like it ’s the only thing that hoi polloi desire now is for you to duplicate what you just did . ”

It ’s not strange , of course , for directors to refuse doing subsequence . Bird ’s fellow CalArts alum , Tim Burton , has only done one subsequence ( Batman Returns ) in his film career ,   with the next closest matter being theBeetlejuicefollow - up that fans have been pine about for year ( at current , there ’s anew writer make for on a screenplay ) . From a creative standpoint , though , it ’s good that both film maker are sticking to their judgment of conviction and producing new , original work throughout their careers , in both the animated and hot - activity realms – work that fans likely would have never seen if they had only committed to doing sequels to their hit films .
