Catherine Hand is an American producer with a love for Madeleine L’Engle’sA Wrinkle in Time . She develop the 2003 television film adaption and return to raise Disney ’s live - action adaptation directed by Ava DuVernay . Disney’sA Wrinkle in Timewas loose on 4 K UHD Blu - Ray , Blu - Ray , and DVD on June 5 , 2018 .
Screen Rant amaze a chance to sit down with Catherine Hand on imperativeness day , where we discussed her sexual love for the original novel , what masses take from the novel , and bringing Ava DuVernay onto the labor .
SR : I experience that you have a long account with the book and obviously when it comes to make the film , it is a small second different . But I apprise those differences primarily because I ’m a biracial nestling myself , so it ’s great run across that representation on filmdom . So , talk to me about your love forA Wrinkle in Timeand how you kind of came to get a line it and how you became attach to it .
Catherine Hand : I mean , it ’s crazy . I read it when I was a really little daughter , ten years old . Loved it . Wanted Walt Disney to make it and star me as Meg and then , when I did n’t recount him about it and he died , I do n’t know where it came from . I experience so guilty that I had n’t sent my missive to him , to tell him about A Wrinkle in Time that I thought , “ Oh my God . I well direct a missive to somebody . ” And I did n’t know anyone else to send it to . Walt Disney was the only one who made film for children in those daylight . So , I thought , “ Oh . I will just have to develop up and make it myself . ” I mean , that was literally it . correct ? And I just loved it . I guess it was a great adventure . I had never ever thought that a daughter could do something that a father could n’t . You know , I had a unseasoned buddy that had learning disabilities and I feel very protective of him . I thought he was particular . You know , there was just so many thing . And I reckon also obviously that Meg is try on to get rid of her faults and that they come in handy on Camazotz . I loved that ! And I loved the skill and the spiritual story . citizenry babble about it . It ’s about everything and that it is about so many unlike things . Well , I have sex all those thing . I love the science . I loved the Negro spiritual . I loved the family unit . I loved the family line dear . I loved the fact that Meg did n’t appreciate the love around her until after the journeying . And I will say that the matter that variety of surprised me when hoi polloi would say , “ Oh , It ’s about Communism . ” You bang , when ten class old read that book , they do n’t have a go at it anything about Communism . So , it ’s surprising to me that people would get locked into Communism . It ’s not . It ’s about fear and it ’s about overcoming your care of the darkness so it does n’t weaken you . Anyway , so plainly there were lots of thing . And I mean , in my case too , I touch Madeleine L’Engle and became very close to her . And there were many metre where I was full of doubt . I estimate despair . And I just loved her so much and I really mat up her erotic love for me that I did n’t need to let her down , so I imagine also that kind of proceed me going . But then there was the third matter and that was , over the year , I would meet thousands of people that loved the book and they were all different . I mean , no two masses saw it the same fashion .
SR : Well , depending on who you are , you get something different out of it .
Catherine Hand : on the nose . So , they all saw it with a different genus Lens . Someone would say the political statement it is . And I would say , “ Oh really ? You see it as a political command ? ” Someone would say it is a religious statement . And I ’d say , “ Oh really ? You see it as a religious statement ? ” I imply , you know , everyone was so unlike . And I was mesmerised and funny by a tale that could continue to appeal to hoi polloi long after they impart childhood .
SR : bring Ava on this project , she is an amazing director , fetch Ava on this task , what does that intend to you and sit down and watching your dream occur true add up to aliveness onscreen , how did that sense ?
Catherine Hand : Oh my gosh ! So , if you could think about this in 1980 when I was starting to find writers , there were no woman to engage to compose this screenplay that had any track record at all for this kind of flick . None . You recognise , none .
SR : Wow !
Catherine Hand : I believe there was one . The woman who wrote Romancing the Stone and then she was killed in a car wreck . You know , there was very very modified people . I mean , E.T. did n’t add up out until 1982 , so there were just very few women . Now come to 2018 where not only do we have Jennifer Lee , but Ava DuVernay . This woman of color who has establish that she is a talent with extraordinary sight and that she wanted to make A Wrinkle in Time and that Disney from Bob Iger on down were so supportive not only of the movie and especially of Ava . I thought that was a tangible game changer and I desire all studios do the same .
