When we picture Día de los Muertos , what is the first image that we see ? The image that typically comes to brain are lucre skulls and , primarily , ornately dressed skeletons . The human components that to begin with defined the dead are gone once they make it over . And this special item of the Mexican holiday presented a pregnant topic for the animation and blueprint team when it came to character building because kids typically do not oppose well to skeletons . Daniel Arriaga , the character designer for Disney/ Pixar’sCoco , spared no details when he spill the beans about the challenge the team face when confronted with have to fetch skeletons to life onscreen :

“ The skeletons presented a huge challenge for us . Number one is skeletons are usually very scary rightfulness ? So we got a cluster of references of skull and literal skeleton and as you see , if you visualise that talking , I ’d run . I would n’t want to see that , but we did want to stay true to the skeletons as well . So we got mental picture of their bones . We actually had a real skeleton like the ones they have in school and we really see if we could actually make that appealing by photoshopping thing on it . ”

Because of the important subject matter behind the film surrounding family and because a good part of the film is site in the Land of the Dead where deceased phratry member are now underframe , it was imperative to make certain that fry were n’t too afraid to catch it . uphold that balance of reality while also maintaining a humorous charm became the sole focus of the aim squad .

As cite before , one of the defining images that we link up with Día de los Muertos are ornately dressed skeletal frame . The job with skeletons is that the limit forcible character traits are run short , which can make it very difficult to speciate between them . This presented itself as a trouble because Miguel interact with his asleep family fellow member in the Land of the Dead . The challenge for the aim team then became how do they give character trait to skeleton in the closet , so that audience member can identify them well . As Arriaga explained , the resolution amount down to the human face pigment that is used during Día de los Muertos :

“ Also two , one of the thing that happens with the skeleton is that you lose all of the things that give us character , you know , your eyes , your noses , your backtalk , your muscle tissue , everything about it . And we all look the same , so how do you get a fiber out of that ? How do you make variations of that ? So we did a crowd of painting and skulls for search stylization and to research dissimilar thing to reduce the scary factor of the skulls . Another huge part of the Day of the dead is the fount rouge , so we wanted to make certain we incorporated the face paint in the skeletons as well . The challenge with side blusher though is that sometimes it can get too distracting , so we had to do another exam with that . ”
