That ’s the question being posed in the current pages of DC Comics , as the intrigue ofThe Flash : Rebirthtakes an unexpected spell . The relaunch of the serial sawdozens of Central City residents join the Speed Force , but things had go back to normal in the past few months , after Barry Allen deal with the restoration of Eobard Thawne , the most well - known scoundrel to behave the name Reverse - Flash .
But as complicated a chronicle as Barry and Thawne may share , the epic feud between The Flash and his ' opposite ' just father a LOT more interesting . After a Speed Force scoundrel provide her for dead , Dr. Meena Dhawan ( Barry Allen ’s most serious romance thus far ) has returned to the DC Universe . The vamp of something suspect and sinister did n’t disappoint , either : Meena Dhawan is the new Reverse - Flash , lay call to the ' Negative Speed Force . '

Barry’s Girlfriend Returns… With Bad News
The existingFlashfans who have n’t kept up with hisRebirthadventures may be shock to hear anyone but Iris West bring up to as Barry Allen ’s romantic partner , but such is comic book rebooting and relaunching . Barry and Iris are still close friends in DC ’s post - unexampled 52 persistence , perhaps fat for something great , but at least on paper , Dr. Meena Dhawan was his destined match . When the aforesaid Speed Force violent storm granted The Flash ’s powers to dozens of guiltless Central City residents , It was Dr. Meena Dhawan who led the operation to study , assist , andtrainthem to become a new generation of Flashes . She even took the name ' Fast Track ' and a black-market and yellow-bellied superhero suit of her own , having been blessed with Speed Force abilities herself .
Romance was quick , with Barry bring out his civilian identity to her ( a more rare decision in comics than on video ) . Which made it all the more tragic when she was cornered by the speester villain Godspeed , who killed her pupils and left no ghost of the good doctor for Barry to witness . That is , untilThe Flash#32 see a char dressed in a new , black and white version of Barry ’s own Flash cause burst out of the Speed Force . Dr. Meena Dhawan ’s return should have been suit for celebration , but her metre in the Speed Force showed her a grievous truth : Barry Allen is dying .
To explain the reason Barry is dying would intend explain that nature of the Speed Force and theNegativeSpeed Force , create as the source of the Reverse - Flash ’s powers . The system of logic is as much illusion as scientific discipline fiction , so the simple account is the good : Barry Allen beat Thawne by encountering , absorbing , and struggling to insure the Negative Speed Force within his own body . Which is where Dr. Meena Dhawa come in , having concoct a method extracting the Negative Speed Force from Barry so that the conflict destroying him could stop .
… And also , so that she could take it for herself .
Meena Dhawan: The New Reverse/Negative Flash
It ’s still a mo unclear as to what name or designation Dr. Meena Dhawan will take : the new Reverse - Flash would be accurate , since she ’s powered by the same Negative Speed Force that sustain Thawne running for age . In the interim , the nickname ' Negative Flash ' may be used to reserve the most iconic villain name for a quality few ( but adding a superb , devious female to the group would n’t be turned down by fans ) . Whatever the case , Meena ’s motives are all in inquiry now . Issue # 34 let on the true extent of her plan , having worked to unlock the closed book of the Speed Force before she was allow a direct lineage to it … and using that noesis to help her colleagues at Black Hole - a military grouping look to steal those force for their own purpose . And by bring in Barry ’s trust , and allowing Meena to take the Negative Speed Force for herself , the superhero played a more willing part in the creation of his villain than ever before .
The next issues should resolve most of our questions , but the futurity of this ' Negative ' speedster who stole Barry Allen ’s heart long before his f number is anyone ’s speculation . Michael Moreci , Joshua Williamson , and Pop Mhan delivered a heck of a bend ( and a killer costume villain , to boot ) , so we can only hope a baddie like Dr. Dhawan will be sticking around the DC Universe in some form or another .
Whether Barry Allen will ever be the same - and whether this treason will push him closer to , or further from theotherpotential romances fans trust to see … only prison term will tell .
