E.T. The Extra - Terrestrialwas originally supposed to end much other than . Steven Spielberg has directed legion films throughout his career , with some going on to break box office record and become pop culture staples;E.T.is one of those movies . The film had numerous reason to be take for an instant classic , such asJohn Williams ' award - winning original scorethat continues to resonate to this 24-hour interval , but away from that and other obvious reason , the movie ’s close is what really made it a timeless account . For those that do n’t remember ( or are unfamiliar ) , Elliot and the other children had evaded law in decree to get E.T. back to his ship . Once at the ship , E.T. says his goodbyes and takes off , with Williams ' iconic score play in the background . It was an emotional end , but the thing is , it was n’t the original ending the movie was supposed to have .

E.T. The Extra - Terrestrialcelebrated its 35th anniversary this preceding June , and next month , it ’ll be returning to theaters for a special time so as to commemorate the milepost . Ahead of the movie ’s re - release , Yahoo ! Moviescaught up with Robert MacNaughton , who play Elliot ’s older brother , Michael , in the film , and he revealed that the moving picture ’s ending was originally much different in the playscript but that he understand why it was changed .
" The last tantrum in the movie was n’t theorize to be the scene that terminate up in the picture . The last scene was going to be all of us playing Dungeons and Dragons again , except this time , Elliott ’s the dungeon captain . Because he was the one that found ET , he sort of find in with the group . And so that was theorize to be the final scene , it was in the script and everything , and then they would pan up to the roof and you ’d see the communicator and it ’s still working – in other words , Elliott is still in jot with E.T .. But after they did the musical score , the music , and they see what they had with the spaceship taking off and everything [ laughs ] – how can you follow that ? I entail , it was a wise alternative . "
E.T.fans may call back that the gameDungeons and Dragonswas magnetic core to the overarching narrative . In fact , MacNaughton had also said part of the reasonableness he was sick in the film was that he knew how the dramatic play the game already . So , seeing Elliot become the new dungeon victor surely would have delivered an aroused punch to audiences , especially to those who realize the game , but it seems like MacNaughton knows the conclusion that Spielberg and Co. eventually blend in with was the veracious option to make .
If they had gone with the original ending , perhaps that would have entice Spielberg andscreenwriter Melissa Mathisonto pursue their plans to make a continuation , with Elliot and his friends eventually attempting to reach E.T. after being kidnapped by extraterrestrial being . Their initial ending surely would have left the door exposed for such a sequel to bechance . However , E.T. The Extra - Terrestrialwould no longer be the one - off classic that it is today .
