Severance

Severanceseason 2 was full of repeated lines with double meaning , but one in particular has really got me cerebrate . The Apple TV series plays around with how we think about the mind , exploring , especially , how consciousness works with retention . It ’s discernible throughoutSeverancethat a rather striking line exists between a cut off person ’s Innie and Outie , but it ’s , perhaps , not as defined as Lumon would like people to call back . Memories may not transport without reintegration , but emotions most certainly do . Still , what ’s even knavish to define is how memory board relates to life or end for an Innie or Outie .

Back inSeveranceseason 1 , Mark told Helly R. that pick out to leave alone Lumon evermore would basically mean death . Innie ’s only exist , more or less , on the Severed Floor , and if an Outie opt never to regress , their Innie would stop to exist . It ’s for this reason thatwhen Irving B. was terminated , his team atMacrodata Refinementmourned him as if he had diedinSeveranceseason 2 , sequence 5 , " Trojan Horse . " However , how does such a dying compare to arealdeath on the outside ? A line from Mark during this same installment subtly face a standardized question .

Innie & Outie Mark Both Repeat The Same Line In Severance Season 2

It’s Not Just About Reintegration - This Repeated Line Has Meaning

In theSeveranceseason 2 installment , " Trojan ’s Horse,“MDR carry a funeral for Irv , but Mark S. was uncharacteristically dismissive about the whole affair . Of of course , he was still dealing with the fact that Helly R. had n’t really been Helly R. However , when face about his attitude , Mark tell of Irv,“He ’s not drained , he ’s just not here . “This was n’t a promising statement , however . Mark was n’t reassuring his friends that they could still , somehow , see Irving again since his body was n’t technically dead . rather , Mark was further lamenting that Outies have the real lives — therealIrv was out there living his life .

Lumon would n’t typically allow employee to hold funerals for terminated Innies , since it reinforced the idea that these people have died .

later on in the same episode , Outie Mark said nearly the same precise line . However , this time , he was talking about Gemma—“She ’s not beat , she ’s just not here . “In this case , the lineisa bit more bright . Mark had opine his married woman was far past the peak of ever returning , all in in every common sense of the parole . However , Gemma ’s body was still animated , and she had just been hold out her Clarence Day with a severely fragmented memory at Lumon .

The fact thatInnie and Outie Marksaid the same line inSeveranceseason 2 is deep meaningful . At first coup d’oeil , it seems as if this is just a upshot of Mark ’s reintegration , and on some floor , it might have been . Innie Mark ’s words likely stay near enough to the Earth’s surface that Outie Mark was capable to repurpose them . However , it ’s important to note that the persuasion between these two lines was very unlike . This was less about Mark ’s memory and more about the fate of Severed peoplein general .

Death Is Thought About Differently Between The Innies & Outies Of Severance

Outie Lives Are The Priority

Mark ’s ingeminate product line create another layer of line between the lives of the Innies and Outies inSeverance . To Innies like Dylan , a coworker never devolve to the Severed Floor is expiry . However , the very substantial emotion behind this experience is belittled by those on the exterior . Innies are often infantilized , and unsevered multitude or Outie ’s perspectives on this type of mourning are a quality example . It ’s appear at like a lilliputian child losing a favored Carassius auratus . On the exterior , however , death is death .

Outie Mark expect Mark S. to sacrifice his lifespan and that of everyone on the Severed Floor to save Gemma , since they would n’t really be dead — they just would n’t be there .

For amoment inSeveranceseason 2 , Mark S. ’s thwarting and hopelessness made him take on the linear perspective of those on the outside . For a moment , he was n’t willing to take Irving ’s last seriously , since he knew the rest of the reality did n’t . Though he eventually lighten up up , this all play a part in Mark S. ’s conversation with his Outie later inSeverance . It was all too easy for everyone to evaluate Gemma ’s life over those of the Innies .
