While Fox and Sony are the most famous beneficiary of Marvel ’s earlyfilm licensing deals , those studios are n’t the only single who sought potentially hot Marvel properties in the pre - Iron Mandays . One of those characters isNamor , the Sub - Mariner , which was licensed years ago by Universal Studios but never developed into a film . Unlike some of the more famous licenced properties , the contracts with Universal evidently stay on valid even though years overstep without a picture show release .
This may have changed late , however . Marvel ’s Chief Creative Officer , Joe Quesada , uncover that the Namor film rights are back with Marvel Studios … to the best of his noesis .
Appearing on Kevin Smith’sFat Man on Batmanpodcast , Quesada was asked about Namor by Smith and his carbon monoxide gas - host Marc Bernardin . At first , Quesada seemed to think that they were asking about the character in the comedian , replying :
" We do , he ’s in the cartoon strip . "
Once it was clarified that the query concerned the celluloid rights , Quesada confirmed that Marvel Studios had the right to the character :
Smith : No , what studio . How come you guys are n’t diving into the water . Do the same people who have Iron Man have Sub Mariner ? "
Quesada:“Yes , as far as I have intercourse yes we do . Yeah , it ’s not at Fox , it ’s not at Sony . "
This is n’t the substantial confirmation that fans were in all likelihood hope for , however . In add-on to sounding like he is n’t quire certain which studio has the rights , the cite of Fox and Sony but not Universal suggests that Quesada may not be as up - to - date on the state of affairs as one might require .
Of course , sports fan might remember that this is n’t the first time that Quesada has commented on theNamorrights . He put forward that Marvel Studios had the right in 2012 as well , spark a batch of speculation about the character look in a future film . This top toKevin Feigeclarifying the right matter in 2013 , which was the last official update that fan have receive until now .
Given the account of theNamordiscussionand the fact that Quesada has been wrong about it in the past , it will probably be best to wait until additional confirmation pops up before gestate to see Namor ’s winged feet on the large screen . That ratification ( or an update that Universal still has the right ) may get along sooner rather than later , since the question will probably be asked to Feige at some tip now that it ’s add up up again .
As Marvel ’s long - standing contract with Universal is often cited as one of the reasons that a newHulkmovie has n’t been made , it ’s possible that theNamorrights are still with Universal as well . Then again , if Marvel has plans that involve the character then the studios could have work something out since the last time we were updated on it . If they did , though … well , it would be too much to inquire for to see Namor show up in a Marvel - producedFantastic Fourmovie , would n’t it .
