Kevin Smith shares his mentation on the time to come of Warner Bros. ' alive - actionJustice Leagueuniverse ( unofficially known as the DCEU ) . The studio apartment formally launched their comic book shared population with Zack Snyder’sBatman V Superman : Dawn of Justicelast twelvemonth - a follow - up to Snyder ’s previous film , Man of Steel- and they continued to expand the franchise with David Ayer’sSuicide Squadlater that year and Patty Jenkins’Wonder Womanearlier this yr .
Now , the humans ’s finest heroes - Superman ( Henry Cavill ) , Batman ( Ben Affleck ) , Wonder Woman ( Gal Gadot ) , Flash ( Ezra Miller ) , Aquaman ( Jason Momoa ) , and Cyborg ( Ray Fisher ) - will unify for the first time ever on the boastful screen in Snyder’sJustice League . And over the next few years , Warner Bros. will release adaptation ofAquaman , Shazam!,Cyborg , andGreen Lantern Corps , withWonder Woman 2andSuicide Squad 2also following . Beyond those movies , though , things are a bit murkier . The studio has several DC Comics - relate projection in various stages of development , some of which wo n’t even connect to the overarching DC universe . Some might find that disturbing , but not Kevin Smith .

Smith sat down with Screen Rant of late and share his thinking on DC ’s future . When asked what his thought were on the studio ’s seemingly knotty plan , Smith said , " All of ‘ em are proficient . There ’s no such thing as a bad comic book movie . Even the ones that people say are quote - unquote bad are better than no comic script movie . " While that ’s for certain true , many people may find fault with becoming accustomed to bad mirthful Holy Writ movies , but Smith explain his logical thinking on that .
" I ’m a forty - seven - year - old man , so I grow up in an geological era where there were no comic script movies . And then every once in awhile you ’d get one , and it was like water in a desert . You ’d get Batman in 1989 , or Blade or something like that . So now , we inhabit in an era where they ’re like , ' Hey , we ’re not even gon na do an interconnected DC universe . We ’re just gon na let Martin Scorsese produce a picture where Leonardo DiCaprio might play the Joker . ' That ’s exciting . So , to me , I ’m wish , the more the festive . "
Smith ’s bear on to the of late announcedJokerorigin picture , which hasTodd Phillips directing and Martin Scorsese producing . what is more , composition have suggested that Scorsese is looking atLeonardo DiCaprio to depict the Clown Prince of Crime himself . And study how often Scorsese and DiCaprio collaborate with each other , it ’s certainly possible this could be the impetus to get the role player last to link the funny Bible existence . Smith then discussed Warner Bros. ' approach to their universe :
" I bed they ’re deviating from the Marvel templet of , like , ' We ’ll make a clustering of characters , and then a reunification picture . Buncha character , reunion movie . ' Instead , Warner Brothers seem to be going with , ' Well , we tried that , and we ’re gon na keep doing it on the side , but we ’re not gon na limit ourselves . We ’re gon na do a bunch of other interesting things . ' They ’re trying to forge their way in the superhero space . So I cerebrate it ’s interesting , I ’m not against that at all . "
It ’s no secret that Warner Bros. has deviated from the established Marvel normal . Rather than start out with solo movies and then have characters squad - up later on , the studio is using the overarching tale to construct upon the cosmos , and that ’s what sets them apart from the crowd . Moreover , their movie maker - driven glide slope is something that ’s continuouslypraised by the franchise ’s director . However , Smith still wants the movies to remain attached wherever possible :
" And then you have some multitude — I’m a purist , so I love when things are interconnected , as well , but I grew up in an epoch where there was a Batman motion picture , there was a Superman flick , and they did n’t really cite each other . One time George Clooney was like , ' This is why Superman work alone ' and we got our nipple hard , we were like , ' Aaah , they know each other . ' So now we live in a universe where these movies can cross over and poppycock , I ’m happy to get the ones that can , but if they do n’t cross ‘ em over that ’s whole okay with me . As long as they ’re sound , as long as they strain .
" And recollect about — some people get kind of crappy , like , ' hail on , serviceman , these computed tomography , they do n’t cognize laughable book of account . ' Comic book and theatrical role have been handed to so many creators over the year . You never jazz what you ’re gon na get in the mitt of any picky somebody . I still get crap for form Batman pee his pants in a Batman book once , which is , you acknowledge , kind of thin out it to something it was n’t , but still , disregardless , you got ta respect the fact that a Almighty can fare on , maybe take that character [ to ] a place that you ’ve never seen that character be taken . And I got ta imagine , if Martin Scorsese jumps onto a Batman movie , we ’re gon na see some sht . Not unsound sht , the in force sh*t that we all daydream about . Goodfellas in a DC universe pic ? I ’m there , take all my money . "
Although the comic ledger movie trend does n’t seem to be stagnate at this point , over - saturation can certainly flex off many viewers . What ’s more , when the vast bulk of superhero flick resemble one another , they start to blend over , and that can lead to dissatisfaction . While we may never see Scorsese take on aBatmanmovie himself , allowing for these Elseworlds - type stories to exist means more distinctive films can unfreeze without affecting the main continuity .
