Live Free or Die Hard

A fun, (almost) gritty & wild ride with Bruce Willis easily slipping back into his trademark role.

If you ’re wonder whether or not to seeLive Free or Die HardI suppose you might be demand two interrogation :

" Is Die heavily 4 good enough to become a fellow member of the ' pass difficult ' club ? "

" Would it have been better if it were rat R ? "

Live Free or Die Hard Poster-1

The response to both questions is : Yes .

purist ( Is there such a matter as aDie Hardpurist ? ) may be disappointed by the trimming take to bringLive Free or Die Harddown to a PG-13 evaluation , but I ’m here to state you that the film still works despite that .

Would it have benefited from the additions that would have made it shit radius ? Most definitely , and that does detract from theDie Hardvibe a picayune chip - but just a little . An R - rated version would probably have happen my rating from 4 to 4 1/2 , but I ’ll get to that later on .

Live Free or Die Hard movie reviews

The picture show opens with a shot that almost immediately severalise us that John McClane is back , and ascertain Willis depict the character on - screen is almost like putting on an old , favorite leather jacket that you have n’t worn in a very long meter . Right away he just make it feel like we ’re right back in his world once again . It looks like he ’s back to being a veritable old law investigator and no , his married woman Holly does not appear in the film as they were finally divorced at some point . We do meet his daughter Lucy ( played very well byMary Elizabeth Winstead ) , from whom he is estranged .

Someone has hacked into the government office responsible for monitoring cyber - terrorism and the drawing card of the agency ( play byCliff Curtis ) require all known " fatal hat " estimator programmers round up right away for questioning due to the sincerity of the criminal offense . One of these programmers is Matt Farrell ( flirt byJustin Long , who you ’ll agnise from those Apple commercial message ) . A number of black modiste have been shoot down and Farrell is on the hit list as well . McClane has been assigned to contribute him in to the Feds for inquiring , and of class as soon as he arrives at Farrell ’s apartment , all hellhole breaks loose and we are catapulted into the motion picture at full speeding .

It twist out that a fellow by the name of Thomas Gabriel ( played byTimothy Olyphant ) is the man behind all the computer - related chaos that is make for havoc on the substructure of the country . Of course the Feds ( one of whom make a brief appearance with the name " Johnson " as a nod to previous films ) are shown to be somewhat behind the bend , if not all ill-chosen and it ’s up to our submarine sandwich and his trusty 20 - something demographic attractor to overhear the bad guys .

Bruce Willis in Live Free or Die Hard

I have to admit that I went into the theater with some trepidation , but hopeful that the motion picture would turn out to be good . It actually transcend my expectations , and I found myself being surprised by that as I sit down there watch out the cinema . It ’s almost all there : the humor , the engagement shot , the action mechanism sequence that are almost over the top but acceptable within the circumstance of the film ( well , except for the sequence with the jet - descend on now ! ) . I have to say " almost " because there were consequence where you could just " feel " that it should have been a bit rougher in combat scene or shootout and that McClane should have been degenerate an F - dud . I eff , that ’s wierd coming from me , but it just fit the conventional character . And the direction they palm masking the famous " Yippe - kay - yay " line was , I ’m sorry … just rickety . Just leave the bloody matter out completely if you ca n’t put it in full - on .

What else worked ? I thought most of the public presentation were pretty good : Willis , Winstead , and even Olyphant each did a skilful job , although Olyphant was a little too " uninfected " , I think . Except for the action sequence with Willis and the fountain ( oh , and the automobile impossibly getting airborne and take out a helicopterfrom below ) , the residue were fairly much trademarkDie Hardbits with the proper balance of suspense and " holy moo-cow ! " factor without become too much over the line .

What did n’t work ? At first having anyone , no matter how slick hacker into the cyber - act of terrorism instruction centerfield had me rolling my eyes , but gratefully later on they give an account that help make a bit more sense of that . Also , whose idea was it to put Kevin Smith in this movie as aStar Wars / computer eccentric ? Puh - lease , give me a fault . The hombre ’s almost 40 , and yeah , sure that could be the gag : He ’s still be in his mother ’s basement . Ha ha … cough . rive me right out of the film . Also although the chief villain was a WASP , he hire German confederate . German bad guys in a Die punishing film … I cerebrate that ’s as much a staple fibre of the serial publication as the Yippi - kay - yay personal line of credit .

Justin Long and Bruce Willis in Live Free or Die Hard

In the end , thoughLive gratuitous or Die Hardis a desirable addition to the series . If they put an R - rated reading on the DVD loss I would in reality rank it right behind the original in term of where it tally in with the rest . A lot of fun , we get to know John McClane a picayune bit better and a great rolling wave - coaster ride that ’ll leave you feeling like your money was well spend .
