Man of Steel

[WARNING: Possible Spoilers Ahead!]

[ UPDATE : The rationality behind Superman ’s " specialness " - even on Krypton - has leaked . Scroll for point . ]

ThoughMan ofSteelwill be the first standaloneSupermanfilm since 1978 - Bryan Singer’sSuperman Returnswas more or less a sequel toSuperman 2- the anticipation for the picture is n’t exactly through the roof at this point . According to Fandango’sMost Anticipated 2013 Summer Movies poll , MOSdidn’t outcome break into the top five .   Of course , that ’s partly because the film ’s merchandising drive has yet to be amply unleashed .

Speaking of merchandising , the cast and crew - including director Zack Snyder , manufacturer Charles Roven , ace Henry Cavill ( Superman / Clark Kent ) , and co - star Amy Adams ( Lois Lane ) - of late sing in some depth about what we can expect from this new take on the Man of Tomorrow .

The audience - courtesy ofEntertainment Weekly- covered everything from plot of ground contingent to action scene to character ontogenesis to superpowers to whether or not Superman ’s greatest weakness , Kryptonite ( that green rock that renders him weak and sometimes deathly sick ) , will make an visual aspect in the flick .

But first , go over out the June screen ofEW , sport Cavill as Superman in a pretty iconic - looking affectation :

According toEW , the focus of this novel Superman film is , in many ways , to humanize the role . A plebeian arguing as to why Superman ’s virtuoso has n’t beam as brightly as it once did - both in the comic book world and in the movie world - is that he ’s become too perfect , too much like a boyscout , too ridiculous , too much like a god , and therefore totally unrelatable . ( It ’s moot how on-key this is -   Grant Morrison’sAll - Star Superman ( 2008)created a Man of Steel that was all of the above and yet at the same time relatable , successful , and hailed as a chef-d’oeuvre far and wide of the mark . )

So the question is , how doesMan of Steelintend to depict a blemished and " human " Superman ? Well , not with Kryptonite , that ’s for sure .   Says Zack Snyder :

" I ’ll be reliable with you , there ’s no Kryptonite in the motion picture . "

While Kryptonite has been successfully utilized in many Superman tarradiddle , it ’s also true that it has often functioned as a crutch for create convenient conflict . Apparently , Zack Snyder and company want to avoid using that crutch at all costs . ( Which is n’t to say it could n’t kill up in a sequel . ) or else , this Superman will be vulnerableemotionally . FromEW :

Once on Earth , his adoptive parent , Ma and Pa Kent ( Kevin Costner and Diane Lane ) , urge himnotto use his immense strength – even in frightening exigency — discourage that not every human would be as accept of him as they are . So Clark Kent grows up feeling isolated , yearn for a connexion to others , and perpetually cover who he is . As a solvent , Man of Steelpresents the disappointed Superman , the angry Superman , the drop off Superman . " Although he is not susceptible to the frailties of mankind , he is definitely susceptible to the emotional feebleness , " Cavill say .

The " frustrated , angry , suffer " Superman certainly bring to mind the one recently acquaint by Grant Morrison inThe New 52Action funnies . That Superman - who more closely resemble the rough and tumble version that first appeared in 1938 - was angrier , more violent , and more likely to use outright intimidation tactics to contain criminals from committing dastardly deeds . In the comedian , a component of that anger came from the deaths of his parent . Will something standardised happen inMan of Steel ?

TheEWarticle also reveals that , even on Krypton , Superman - or Kal - El - is considered to be " exceptional . " So special that his nascence " caused alarm " the world over . Uhh , say what ?

So what does this mean exactly ? Could Superman ’s powers inMan of Steelbe unrelated to his Kryptonian heritage ? Might he have been endowed with said powers from birth by his scientist Padre , Jor - El ( Russell Crowe ) ?

Amy Adams as Lois Lane in ‘Man of Steel’

Itwouldexplain why Superman could credibly defend the Earth from not onlyGeneral Zod(Michael Shannon ) , but numerous Kryptonian enemies ( possibly even an United States Army ) . Perhaps Zod has no " superpowers " at all . Perhaps his long suit come from his Kryptonian armor and advanced alien technology . Of of course , this is all guess at this point , but it ’s interesting to consider . If true , it would likely be a really controversial change for comic record fan .

What about Lois Lane ? What can we expect from her relationship with Superman ? According to Amy Adams :

" I think she ’s very transient . She ’s quick to pick up and go at a moment ’s observation . I cogitate that unquestionably could be part of what she sees in Superman — not really laying down roots , not developing trustfulness . "

Movies

Lois Lane will terminate up being one of the principal ground Superman steps forward to defend Earth from Zod . While he ’s grown into adulthood feelingalienated(see what I did there ? ) from the Earthlings around him , Lane will turn out to be someone he really cares for and want to protect .

in conclusion , producer Charles Roven talked about the " building - smashing , train - slinging , estrus - vision - blasting " action scene we ’ll see in the film - something Superman fans have been wait for since the dawn of modernistic particular effects technology :

“ You need to give the hearing great spectacle . You need them to go to the movie , be deplete their popcorn and be like , ‘ Wow ! ’   But it ’s just not good enough to give them the ‘ Wow . ’ You want them to be emotionally engaged . Because if you just have the ‘ wow , ’ ultimately you get bludgeoned by that and you stop manage . ”

Man of Steel

sound well to me . Even ifMan of Steeldoesn’t terminate up " wowing " both in terms of action spectacle and emotional participation , it ’s supporting to know that the filmmakers are determined to do just that . Only time will secern if they can pull it off .

If you desire more detail on why Kal - El might be excess - special ( beyond just being the last of his foreign metal money ) , you ’ll have to read the June topic ofEntertainment Weekly .

This mistily recalls John Byrne ’s post - Crisis   origin reboot ( incidentally titledThe Man of Steel )   from the 1980s , wherein Krypton was depicted as an emotionally cold and sterile planet and babies were regularly created in test tube-shaped structure . Superman ’s forefather and female parent , Jor - El and Lara , were unique in that they really get it on one another .

Ultimately , Kal - El was sent on a ship to Earth not as an infant , but rather as a foetus inside of a " birthing matrix . "

Man ofSteelhits theaters June 14th , 2013 .
