The 2017 Academy Awards end on a rather inapt bill tonight , asLa La Landwas declare as the succeeder of the Best Picture award … only for it to be revealed that Barry Jenkins’Moonlightwas the real winner . The mix - up appears to have been the result of the haywire envelope being handed to presenters Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty - specifically , the envelope for Best Lead Actress , which Emma Stone had won shortly prior to the Best Picture announcement .

In the Best Picture family , Moonlightwas up against eight other nominee : La La Land , Arrival , Hacksaw Ridge , Hell or High Water , Manchester By the Sea , Hidden Figures , Fences , andLion . La La Landwas widely auspicate to win Best Picture , withMoonlightfollowing as a unaired bit , so this win is n’t too much of a surprise amid an honor ceremony with very few disturbance .
