Patti Cake$was one of the most talk about movies at this year’sSundance Film Festival , earning not only its theatre director , Geremy Jasper , decisive plaudit but also its stars . The hip joint - hop comedy define in New Jersey follow Patricia , a mixologist with rap ambitions ( played by Australian actress Danielle MacDonald ) , and Hareesh , Patti ’s best booster who moonlights as Jheri the knocker when he ’s not go as a pharmacist .
Jasper hire Siddharth Dhananjay to take on this authoritative plunk for role , having come across the Indian actor ’s viral YouTube videos . Going by Dhananjay the First , Siddharth worked with his champion from Iowa ’s Grinnell College to make mockery of popular R&B songs including Destiny ’s Child ’s “ Say My Name ” and Mario ’s “ Let Me Love You ” , which got plunk up by WorldStarHipHop .
Sid took time out to speak to Screen Rant about land his first picture show role , visa problems , what it ’s like for browned actors in Hollywood and why he has one reason , and one ground only , for wanting to star in a Marvel movie :
Patti Cake$has gain some major bombilation since Sundance , it must be awing to realise that sort of plaudits for your first movie .
It ’s been pretty derisory for it to be my first movie , but yeah it ’s been pretty overwhelming . People have taken a the like to it and all type of people , really young kids and old citizenry , everybody seems to have retrieve something they like about it and it ’s really awesome .
How was your experience of it being your first film compared to your YouTube videos ?
Yeah , I ’ve always sort of been a huge cinephile and seeing the process of make film , the whole procedure of this film , it was like being a tike in the confect storage . Just being there and watch people work and figuring what it is to actually make a moving-picture show , you love , how many part are actually involved in that , it was really awe-inspiring to be there . I had no idea that there could be a guy draw focus from the main dude on photographic camera , small matter like that blew my mind . As a motion picture lover , it was awe-inspiring and as a new actor I learnt so much working with all these exceedingly gifted people . It ’s been kind of a whirlwind and I have n’t had the time to take a step back and to the full take it all in yet .
So you ’re a cinephile , what were the movies that exalt you to act ?
originate up I watched so many types of flick . I ’m from India , I maturate up there and Indonesia , so knowing the spoken language of other country build it so squeamish because you get to watch all of those movies too . So I ’d watch a lot of Bollywood movies , South Indian , Collywood movies , English motion-picture show , a turn of everything . I gauge the first genuine experience of see a movie that I retrieve was Gladiator . I feel like that movie completely be active me in such a crazy way . It ’s one of the best pic . Whenever it ’s on telecasting , randomly , I ’ll watch it and every single time when he ’s walk through the wheatfields and shit , I cry . That was the one that I recall walking out of the theatre , thinking damn , I ’ve never matte up like this before .
My favourite film maker of all metre is Wong Kar - wai , I love his moving-picture show . I do n’t have a favourite but there ’s something about his stuff that makes it find so effortless , it feel so immersive . His clobber makes me want to make movie . I never thought of myself as an player but this was a calamitous go . I love I want to be something to do with movie but [ Patti Cake$ ] made me realise I love act too and it felt so lifelike and effortless .
Other ethnic nonage actors likeRiz Ahmedhave say that becoming an doer never really felt like an option or a possibility for them . Is that how you felt ?
I guess it is kind of different for me growing up in India and Indonesia as there were so many the great unwashed who looked like me in movies because of Bollywood and Collywood . doer in India are idolise in really crazy way . They ’re god to the common gentleman’s gentleman so in a way acquire up watching these stars gave me the confidence to be able to do it . Thinking about it from a Hollywood position , it only happened when I moved here for college and I started getting into the finish and the media here , but I never really was design on being an actor , but in the bottom of my pith I knew I had the confidence and exemption to do it , but I never really believe of it being a calling choice . I was fight with my visa office here the right way before the movie bump . Being an Indian it ’s like an daily matter in your life . If you want to go anywhere as a family you have to figure out your visa so I knew these types of things would befall , but it was still complicated and frustrating for sure . The plan was to ride out my bookman visa and go home to India , and hopefully shadow a manager and oeuvre on the scene in that sense , but then [ the pic ] happened and it ’s been an even Thornton Niven Wilder , crazy chance so I had to go for it and give it my best .
So you function to Sundance , how was that experience for you ? Were there any WTF moments like meeting Robert Redford ?
I cogitate the first " lift me " moment was back in 2014 when the movie was at the Sundance Director ’s Lab , this like Utopian workshop land where first metre film maker come to work on their scripts and they invite actors they may need to work out on the moving-picture show . That ’s when I first got involve , right when I was graduating and I forgather Danielle and Geremy and we were hear to cultivate on the scene and I just was n’t get it , even though I had the all important line , and it just was n’t work . ThenEd Harris , who was one of the mentor of the curriculum , walk into watch and I was like “ ass , this is the worst , ” because I just make out Ed Harris . Two minutes of failing and Ed go “ everybody meter out . Sid , add up with me , ” and he takes me to the side and talk to me for like four minutes , but it felt like 20 hours , and then he say “ ok , go do it now , ” and I just find so much better and it work , and the aspect it feel constitutional and natural . Then he just fistbumped and walked off . That was decidedly a groundless minute I ’ll never draw a blank . I also metPeter Dinklagewho was on the jury venire .
Are you aGame of Thronesfans ?
Siddharth Dhananjay and Danielle MacDonald in Geremy Jasper’s Patti Cake$
Yeah , obviously ! Who is n’t ? But he seemed so serious . I ’m certain he ’s like a really good guy , but he was on the jury and Bridget , who is in the movie , knows him so they were visit for a while and we would just see him around , from place - to - lieu , and run into him . He would n’t say anything he ’d just take the air by and say “ Patti Cake$ ! ” [ laughs ] I match Paul Rudd and Molly Shannon too and that was just amazing . It was just like “ look at me , I ’m amalgamate with the stars ! ” We make that to the next floor in Cannes , so that was really fun too .
You ’re a knocker in the film and you did rapping in the viral video . Are you worried you ’re go to be stereotyped as a rapper from now on ?
Yes ! [ express joy ] The challenge for me in this movie is more than being the flamboyant rapper mortal . I can do that really easy and it feels natural , but the challenge for me was to find the inner human being , the Jheri who loves his honorable friend and cares for her , it ’s that . Finding the balance between this wild dude and being like a real person . I did n’t study act , so the best way for me to learn at this point is to put myself in as many dissimilar roles as potential . I suppose come off Patti Cake$ as my first movie is easy for mass to say “ hey , he ’s the funny hombre . Put him in the multi - cam as the Indian buster , ” and I know that ’s not what I want to do at all . As long as it ’s far away from that . We ’re in an interesting sentence right now where being brown on screen is like a buzzword . Like , they desire a piece of it but they do n’t really know what they ’re buying into so it ’s still a rather unexplored space . And I think people like Riz , Kumail [ Nanjiani ] , Aziz [ Ansari ] and Dev [ Patel ] have made it wanton for me to exist in this space , but make out off this movie I almost mean that I have a responsibility now to try and make theatrical role subsist for me that are n’t just roles that postulate to have an Indian in it , but just befall to be Indian .
Jheri is Sid’s first movie role after being discovered via his YouTube parody videos
Right , like Priyanka Chopra ’s character inBaywatch , Victoria Leeds , who has no racial indicator , but at the same time we need to be making motion picture that offer more various tale and show that westerly cinema does n’t always equal white .
Definitely , there ’s a way it can be done . It ’s all so contextual . When you learn something you could forthwith tell where this is coming from . It might end up coming down to making the roles from scrape for you , making movies that have [ ethnic character ] if they do n’t live . If nobody want it to happen , you have to campaign for it to happen yourself , I guess .
Have you had any roles or sense of hearing that you ’ve turn down because you do n’t require to perpetuate racial stereotype ?
For certain , but right now my independent labor is working on my visa , I need that O1 , and we require every type of pressing so we ’re hoping they ca n’t say no to me . I do n’t have the chance to turn anything down ! right on after coming out of this motion picture , and move to LA , I ’ve done all the auditions I perchance can do and that include a ton of damn that I ’d never want to do even if I got it . Like role that are so stereotypical and corny and highly uninteresting to me . I went in and read for a fibre called Sanjay , a side character , and I work into the auditory modality and I was like one of three Amerind dudes for that role . But in the same room there were black dudes , Hispanic dudes , Nipponese - Korean looking at clotheshorse , and I was like what does that mean ? If you do n’t go for the Indian dude are you pop off to change his name ? So basically it was just a placeholder for the other , for the non - white person .
It must be so frustrating to see this type of use that feel more like writers are fill diversity inverted comma rather than offering anything of gist .
Yeah , it is and I ’m the golden one who did n’t have to brook for years being stamp and I can already feel how stressful it is . Imagine hoi polloi who have feed up their life sentence to become an role player and they ’re not white , they ’re struggling to get part , and are forced to play roles that they scorn but do because they require to make a name for themselves . I have the luxury to take my time and be smart to figure out what the next affair is rather than Koran that TV show . It ’s nice , but can be cheerless .
What are the idealistic movies or shows you ’d like to be in ? Have you bring forth anyMarvelambitions ?
I ’d make out to do dramatic role , I feel like I ’d be good at those . I do n’t know why , I ’m just say that , but who knows ! I think that when people think of Amerind dudes they still think of them as funny citizenry or comedian . I desire to change that somehow , encounter a role that has a making love stake , to exchange the way that people comprehend a chocolate-brown soul . If that imply being in a Marvel movie , a immense big budget project and the master character was an Indian dude , that would be fucking sick , I would totally be down for that . So I approximate I ’m come from it from a place where I ’m trying to fuck with the condition quo .
It ’s showing people of colour , especially Arab or South Asian masses , that they do n’t always have to be the villain . That they can be the Heron too .
Definitely , and on different level it ’s different for me than Riz or Dev in that , you know , I ’m not Indian - American , or British - Pakistani , I ’m actually just Indian and that changes thing a slight spot too . The ideal program would be to do thing on a world level , so do the reverse of Priyanka and kill it here but then go home and kill it there as well .
So be the Martin Luther King of Hollywood and Bollywood ?
Yeah ! Would n’t that be novel ? That would be crazy because I feel like I ’m two different people depend on where I am . I do n’t speak like this at plate , I preen differently bet on which side of the Earth I ’m on , so that ’s kind of a unique position that I might be able-bodied to give to people . I ’m seek to find a manner to help both . But this is like ideal life in 20 years so , I do n’t know if it will happen , I hope it does .
