The other day , weScreen Rantwriters were chatting online and the subject of furore movies came up . now I begin conceive of all the cult pic I ’ve seen and do it ( or loathed ) - so I think it would be nifty to list some of our favourite cult movies individually , and as a group .
As we were compiling our inclination , we moot what , exactly , constitutes a " cult film . " We sing about unlike criterion … for illustration movies that fail at the box office ( or do only modestly well ) , but then do terrific on home picture . Or maybe they tank overall , but have a small , passionate ( and hugger-mugger ? ) buff base . Then there are moving-picture show that gainsomepopularity , but are really , really uncanny . SR boss Vic Holtreman even beat the question onTwitter , and perplex some great answers .
To patch up any disputation about whether any of our picks were actual cult movies or not , we consultedWikipedia , and rule this definition :
" Acult film(or cult film / picture ) is a picture that has acquired a highly devoted but relatively low chemical group of buff . Often , cult movies have failed to achieve renown out of doors of the small fanbases … "
They do have a list of exceptions … for example typesetter’s case where a cultus motion picture became recognized by mainstream audience . Films likeRocky Horror Picture Show , Blade Runner , Evil Dead , and others . But we ’ll still believe those furore films , just I that are more widely known now .
I also think there are movies that take off out as religious cult films , then become major hits andcan’tbe considered " well - known cult films " ( like the aforementionedEvil Dead ) . I ’m babble out about movies likeAustin Powers , which became a furore flick for a very short time on VHS and DVD , before becoming so grownup , it spawn two major grossing sequel and perchance afourth film .
And finally , do n’t put off a religious cult picture with a " sleeper " film , which does well in theaters - but only after word of mouth spread . There ’s Something About Marycan be considered a sleeper hit .
So with that criteria in mind , here areScreen Rant ’s favored cultus moving picture ( most of these favorite inclination are not in fave to least fave monastic order ):
Heath McKnight(in no particular order ):
" For me , I saw a lot of these cult flick in the theater and I frankly thought they ’d do at least pretty good at the box business office . I still fall in love with them , especially when I could watch them over and over again on DVD . I make out they ’re cult films , but I ’d name at least three or four as my all - time favorite movies . "
Kofi Outlaw :
" My definition of a rage movie is a pic that I totally get when I see it , even though so many other citizenry in the theater around me do n’t seem to get it at all . Until the videodisk drop , and then , lastly , other people seem to get it too . "
Vic Holtreman :
" From the definition above , movies that I witness I have intercourse determine over and over again are often the ones from which you may quote lines of dialog over and over and over again . I ’ve include one favorite quote from each film ( but there were many to choose from ! ) "
Sabrina Cognata
" For me , cult motion-picture show are about special moments you may apportion with unknown . Not long ago I was babble with a friend when I allege , ' I had the strangest dream , ' when some guy rope sitting near us leaned over and say , ' Was it a dreaming where you see yourself standing in sort of sun - god robes on a Pyramids of Egypt with a thousand nude women yell and throwing little pickles at you ? ' And I acknowledge that guy was awesome . It ’s about minutia and appreciation for things that were overlooked the first time around . But most of all it ’s about being an elitist over something that people , for the most part , do not get or realize . "
Ross Miller :
" I would classify a picture show described as ' cult ' as one which you may watch over and over again , quote lineage throughout your day-by-day life ( often at the extreme annoyance of sept and friends ! ) and never get hackneyed of them . Alongside my list , I have put just one of my favored quotation from each of them . "
Rob Keyes :
" I delimit cult films as movie not made with a massive budget and not receiving a wide successful box spot . Cult movies circulate through password of mouth , earning their success through a highly devoted fanbase - They become more popular after their initial release . The moving picture I take are all movies that I had to watch out more than once and ones that are extremely memorable for me . "
Bruce Simmons
Carl Lee
" Most of my film collection is made of cult celluloid . I originally had list movies like ' Boondock Saints ' and ' Reservoir Dogs ' but the selected ten can be found somewhere near my desk or already in my players . Their subject matter , story electric discharge , or overarch theme has become the unheard 2d judgment and guiding spark against the cereal of the mainstream . Yeah , I have blockbusters ( who does n’t ) but the discs that stripped scrape up from being played too often are the following . "
Niall Browne :
" My religious cult deary are films that I can watch over and over again without becoming bored . Sure they may not be loved by a caboodle of the great unwashed -‘Ishtar’and’The Postman ' are prime examples but they do have a special place in my heart . They are also flick that should ( must ? ) be watch by film fans to really celebrate the true spectrum of the medium . "
Finally , here is our combinedTop 10Screen Rantlist of preferred fad movies ( in order ):
Now that you ’ve seen our preferred cult hits , we need to see yours ! What are the cult picture show you bulge into the DVD player ( or even the VCR ) ? And if you do n’t jibe with our pick , we ’d bonk to see what you think .
