Screen Rant had the chance to sit down with Trevor and Jason , where we discussed Trevor ’s passage to more fledged projects , whatSuperflysays about the human race today , the motivation of Jason ’s character Eddie , how the film told the American Dream , and Jason ’s thoughts on succeeding hip hops biopics .
SR : Congratulations on the film guys . It was a mint of sport . Now , Trevor , I get ta ask , so a lot of projects you worked on are calculate a circumstances towards the class . This is one of your more first early ripe projects . How has that modulation ?
Trevor : It was amazing . It ’s something I ’ve always wanted to do . plainly growing up and watching Will , watching Leonardo . All these people being action stars , Tom Cruise and , yeah , it ’s a pipe dream come true for me . But I think once I say the stuff I ’d definitely just , you know . I never want to be adhere in a boxwood . So of course I ’ll probably go back doing family movies . I want to do a Will Ferrell like movie , then I went to do drama . I never want to stay in one lane or feel like life is too short for that . So rent ’s do everything . And this is one of them .
SR : Exactly . Now the original motion picture focused a deal on like the pander and clobber like that . What is Superfly have to say about the world today ? Because this is obviously an update version of the eccentric .
Jason : I do n’t eff . I think he would honestly experience like a lot of the thing that we do are clouding our discernment as the great unwashed . But you know , that ’s neither here or there ( LAUGHS ) I ca n’t show my head .
SR : Well Eddie ’s grapheme is Priest ’s correct hand man . What is Eddie ’s motivation in this film ?
Jason : Eddie ’s motivation is the thoughts that Priest are having , really honestly . Because it ’s like we swop some stuff and nonsense up and I told you it was n’t gon na work in sure situation like with Scatter . My dude , why are we get going to his theater ? Like why are we going around him ? Like , here ’s the situation . What materialise . They have him and I was just stick out there . And then , you have a go at it what I mean ? There ’s nothing I could do to help .
SR : Priest finds winner well beyond the scale of the first , the originalSuper Fly . How does that shake affair up ? Because this is an American dream story . But this is on such a large scale . So the pursuit of the American pipe dream . How was that kind of evidence in this story ?
Trevor : I think the dreaming is the same . But I think it ’s different because of the prison term change and the position . I opine it being in New York and now being in Atlanta definitely switches things up . But I think at the end of the day , you just see the , how far we ’ve add up as a people . And I recollect Priest ’s character especially , he ’s superintelligent and if he was n’t in the drug game , he could be the chief operating officer of a multibillion dollar company . good ? But I think the dream stayed the same .
SR : I ’m a huge lover ofStraight Outta Compton . And it kind of set the bar for hip hop biopics , which is now a thing . Which other artists do you think deserve a rose hip hops biopic outside of Tupac and Biggie ?
Jason : I do n’t jazz because they got so , so many people that like are break down without no inside information like Pimp C. Like , that ’s the fellow , you know what I imply ? A lot of people , man . Like I do n’t know , me in person , I would do something about like J Prince or Rap - A - Lot or something like that . You bed what I mean ? Like just cause , like , mass do n’t even understand that , the power we have , when we ’re in number . Like legit . The FBI used to be on their back . Like , “ What ? All we did was take the Man to meet Farrakhan . Why are you doing that ? Because he melanise . ” You know what I mean ? ( LAUGHS ) “ Oh no , we just pick out them because I do n’t know . ” You know ? But it ’s like the whole billet . They ’ll attempt to always close that unity down . They do n’t want us to really wish each other , you know what I intend ? And as soon as we do , they just run into the Christian church and spray some hoi polloi .
