Ex Machina , which embraced and dare skill fabrication and horror tropes , cash in one’s chips on to gain an Oscar for its limited effects . Annihilationwill also explore the relationship between scientific discipline fiction and horror - and the special effects in the lagger look excellent - but its similarity toEx Machinamay end there .
A number of images from the trailer also come out in the book ’s imagery : the lighthouse , the pillar / tunnel , the cross - pollination of animals and plant life , the human - like industrial plant ( or are they flora - like humans ? ) . Portman ’s biologist is part of a squad of four charwoman - the Biologist ( Natalie Portman ) , the Anthropologist ( Gina Rodriguez ) , the Surveyor ( Tessa Thompson ) , and , their radical leader , the Psychologist ( Jennifer Jason Leigh ) - who are entering Area X to study what it has become and why it has become this path . This group has prepare together specifically for this commission , and have been give certain parameter ( such as never using their material public figure and being limited in the technology that they can utilize ) which are dictate but never fully explain in the playscript . The trailer seems to show five people entering into Area X , which may or may not be a reference to the Linguist in the book who opt to turn back at the border of Area X.
