Avengers: Infinity War

SPOILERS forAvengers : Infinity Warahead .

Avengers : Infinity Warco - conductor Joe Russo has excuse why Thor did n’t kill Thanos when he had the luck . eternity Warbegins with Thanos and his Black Order slaughtering half of the Asgardians that survived the outcome ofThor : Ragnarok(Heimdalland Loki included ) , before leave behind Thor for dead in space . After being rescued by the Guardians of the Galaxy , Thor then sets out with Rocket Raccoon and ( teenage ) Groot on a journeying to Nidavellir , in the hopes of get a transposition for his hammer Mjolnir ( RIP ) that will be knock-down enough to take down the Mad Titan .

With the help ofEitri ( Peter Dinklage)- the sole remaining dwarf of Nidavellir - and after nearly being killed ( again ) , Thor regained his long suit and was ready to take on Thanos with a brand new pound - axe recognize as Stormbreaker .   Thor came very tight to defeating the Mad Titan too , when he rammed his arm into Thanos ' chest simple seconds after Thanos has acquired the last of the Infinity Stones for his Gauntlet . regrettably , that was n’t enough to stop the villain from snapping his fingers and literally wiping out half of the existence ’s population in the process .   So why did n’t Thor aim Stormbreaker at Thanos ' head ( as the insane Titan taunted him for not doing ) and shoot down him justly there ?

The snarky answer , of course , is " Because then there would be noAvengers 4 . " The long solution is that Thor want retribution for everything Thanos did to him , as Russo toldComic Book . Russo further indicated that Marvel fans should be just as tempestuous at Thor for not doing the smart thing as they are atStar - Lord for his own failure to check Thanosfrom carrying out his awful plan :

" I would argue that the fan base could be equally upset with Thor , who chose to contrive that axe into Thanos pectus and not his head . Because he require to severalize Thanos that he get his retaliation . Had he run for a kill shot , that snap would not have take place . These are selection that characters who are feel immense pain make and hopefully , the hearing can watch to empathize with those theatrical role because they can turn through stories . Stories can teach us things and that we should attempt to see every alternative from the perspective of the fictitious character that made the choice . "

There ’s sure enough way for debate about whether Thor give way to kill Thanos is a plot widget or get sense for the fictional character ’s bow in the Marvel Cinematic Universe . Thor has gone through quite the dramatic journey in the MCU and is far more fledged now than he was when he made his heavy screen door debut in 2011 . However , like anyone , he ’s still susceptible to allow his emotion dapple his good judgement .   After all the heartbreak and pain Thanos caused him , it ’s perceivable that Thor would want to get some emotional closure by telling Thanos off before bolt down him and saving the twenty-four hour period .   Thor did n’t take the time to think how this plan could go wrong either , seeing as he   moderately much raced direct to earth to join the battle against the Mad Titan after getting Stormbreaker .

Alternatively , MCU fans could write this one off as a necessary contrivance and exit it at that . Infinity Warwas always the first one-half of a two - part story , so there was inescapably going to besomereason why even Thor would n’t be able-bodied to kill Thanos at first . For interchangeable reasons , fans arehaving a hard time buying thatInfinity War ’s conclusion is legitand not something that will be largely ( if not entirely ) reversed by this clock time next year . All the same , it should be interesting to see how Thor respond to his failure to stop Thanos and how that informs his ongoing reference discharge in next year’sAvengers 4 .
