Battlefield V
Over the last two weeks , two of the most gamy visibility and most anticipated game had their official reveal events . We ’re of course of study , talking aboutBattlefield Vfrom developer DICE and publisher Electronic Arts , andCall of Duty : Black Ops 4from developer Treyarch ( with the help of Beenox for its PC interlingual rendition ) and publishing firm Activision .
Both event earned mixed reactions ( over 300,000 disapproval for theBattlefield Vtrailer ) however and funnily held back so much , focusing instead on marketing keywords and less so on gameplay , and we ca n’t figure out why .
In the case ofBlack Ops 4 , which went first ( we were in attendance ) , the industry was funny going into this one since it was all but confirmed thatTreyarch would hop doing a traditional blockbuster single - player account campaignthis yr and rather add on a battle royale modal value . The goal , according to their presentation , is to offer a more replayable , more social , long - term experience . Yet all they allow meeter see and trifle was the steady multiplayer , now a more inner and more tactical 5v5 experience that tries to emulate the tactical layer ofOverwatchandRainbow Six Siege . We did n’t really get gameplay of the Modern Zombies subject , and we saw absolutely nothing on gameplay or specifics on theBlackout battle royale mode- the singular newthingthis year would bring to theCall of Dutyformula .

We were told that even without an genuine tale campaign , Black Ops 4would weave a stronger narrative experience through its multiplayer but this was not prove and in our interviews , the devs could n’t specify what this mean other than the idea that in multiplayer , players select a specialist who they hope become iconic fictional character ( again , theSiegeandOverwatchcomparison ) . We did n’t see or learn anything on narrative , similar to the lack of item on the Blackout fashion . We did confirm however , that the Blackout struggle royale style was a relatively last - moment addition to the game . We can confirm it was call back about internally sometime last year asPlayerUnknown ’s Battlegrounds(PUBG ) andForniteexploded in popularity , but the specificidea for their ownBlack Ops - style take on the formuladidn’t come until the beginning ofthisyear , meaning this big style is getting less than a year ’s development to be quick for launch in October .
Still , the reveal result did n’t showcase this and it should have . ForBattlefield V , DICE ’s reveal even makes less signified since their livestream was n’t to come until the following week from an effect in London . They somehow designate even less gameplay , and worse , did n’t have people get paw - on with the game . Why do this upshot then ? We make love the game is coming so what ’s the use of such a special , unsatisfying reveal now ?
die brought in Trevor Noah ( host ofThe Daily Show ) to keep theBattlefield Vpresentation quippy and light but not all of his jokes land , and it was made worse by the 30 minutes comprising of mostly talking and teleprompter reading . The only case was in the game ’s cinematic trailer which does n’t give an honest look at gameplay . While we did n’t attend the actual event for this one , we did drop three hours with the dev run a mean solar day originally who walked us through the impressive new animations , level of point , and post - release plans for the plot . It bet and sounded awesome . We view a tinge of so much more exciting stuff which assure a plot that really does advertize the shooter genre forwards in quality and display , but this was absent from the public reveal . Again , we did n’t see gameplay though , and introductory detail like squad size we could n’t get an response to .
What’s With All the Secrecy?
Both publishers made the smart move of dropping season pass and yield - for DLC expansions for map packs and such this twelvemonth , and making this a cardinal item of their reveal events , but both play shady in avoiding detail on how post - release monetization would work . Premium currency ? dread ornamental loot boxes ? Crappy XP promoter ? Why is this a secret ? Through interviews we learned forBFVthere will be a premium currency but we do n’t yet know incisively how it can be spent .
Why are detail on the new stuff so secret ? Why are n’t these devs showing us unexampled gameplay ? Does it matter if we see some now , and more in a few weeks at E3 ? What ’s the period of these events if it leaves a sundry response to first impressions ? What ’s the point if the very first official look at these game is n’t flesh out , and therefore not really impressive ? BothBlack Ops 4andBattlefield Vare new installment in long - course franchises that have been around over a decade and both are games we knew a whole stack about from hearsay and reports corroborate true - Their existence and canonic feature article sets are not at all surprising . Their marketing teams need to step up .
